Caring for our Country Community Coastcare - successful applicants
Caring for our Country Community Coastcare was launched on 19 May 2008 and closed on 25 July 2008. Proposals for funding were sought against two of the six national priority areas, particularly those that would be:
- protecting and rehabilitating Coastal environments and critical aquatic habitats and
- enhancing community skills, knowledge and engagement with Indigenous Australians, volunteers and coastal communities.
Ministers have approved a total of over $22.5 million for activities under Caring for our Country Community Coastcare 2008-09.

| National | Coastal Conservation - A student leadership educational resource program | A student leadership education resource program in coastal conservation will be developed through this capacity building project. The program will be available free on the internet to all schools and coastal community groups in Australia and will provide students with the skills and educational tools to undertake a leadership role in local coastal conservation projects. A national training package will be developed and the project will lead to increased numbers of people available to undertake conservation activities. | Cocos (Keeling) Islands | Control of feral animals to protect the nesting sites of the Buff Banded Rail on Direction Island | Direction Island has been uninhabited since the Cable Station ceased it's operation around 1965. A proposal has been granted to reintroduce the endangered Buff Banded Rail to the southern atoll via Direction Island as a starting point. The project aims to eradicate feral animals such as cats, rats and chickens to support the initiative of reintroducing the endangered specie of Buff Banded Rail to the Southern Atoll from North Keeling Island; replanting of native tree species on the island; educating the community in taking ownership of the survival of the Buff Banded Rail; and assist local young people with employment and recognition for environmental protection. | $14,250.00 | Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands | CC085294 | |
